Alex was born in 1994 in Cambridge, England, and is currently studying Music at Selwyn College, University of Cambridge.
He was a member of Aldeburgh Young Musicians between 2006 and 2012, and has also been a member of the National Youth Orchestra Composers' Course, receiving tutoring from Anna Meredith, Larry Goves, Paul Patterson, Judith Weir and Gabriel Prokofiev.
In 2010, Alex was awarded Highly Commended in the BBC Young Composer of the Year competition, with a composition called 'Owl, Hunting'. Alex won the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year competition in 2011 with 'Silvered Image'.
In March 2012 the Ely Sinfonia performed, in Ely Cathedral, an atmospheric orchestral piece, 'Somniare', composed by Alex, making use of the space's extraordinary acoustics. In April 2012, a new contemporary ballet, 'Anka's Story', composed by Alex, was premiered in Cambridge; a full length dance piece telling the story of Holocaust survivor Anka Bergman and her baby daughter, Eva. Both Anka and Eva were present at the performance.
Alex began learning violin at the age of seven, taking up piano a year later. He is currently taught violin by Simon Cartledge and piano by Peter Britton, in Cambridge. Alex studied A-levels at Hills Road Sixth Form College, Cambridge, where he achieved A* grades in all of Music, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics.
